What is Random Access Memory in Computers?

RAM stands for random access memory. It is a removal module installed on the motherboard of a computer. One of functions of memory is to make sure that as your computer initializes programs, and you can also do something called multitasking efficiently. Multitasking is the process of opening one or more programs on your computer and switching between them. It is time saving but requires large amounts of resources. It is called random because it is volatile meaning when once you computer is shut down what ever data or information that was strored in the cache will be lost.

The term RAM or memory appears in almost every computer specification. You will find it in computer manuals and sales booklets. In many instances, how much RAM a PC has is a major factor in its price. RAM is one of the smallest components in the computer but you would be surprised that this small piece of hardware actually determines how much you pay for your machine. RAM plays a very important role in the operation of the computer. The RAM controls how fast programs would run on your PC. As you may already know that the processor of the computer controls how fast a computer could potentially load a program from the hard drive. After the program has been loaded, your computer memory kicks in to support the processor. In a practical scenario, how much memory your computer has installed will determine how efficiently applications well perform. Although not all applications require high amounts of memory, however if you are a gamer, or you do a lot of video or photo editing considering maxing out your computers memory, you will enjoy smoother running programs and less frustration.People who use high-performance applications such as Adobe Fireworks and video editing software require a large amount of memory to run these programs smoothly.

Now let's look at how much a typical computer user needs. If you are running a P3 machine without any advanced programs such as video editing software or even CorelDraw, you would be OK with a minimum of 256 RAM. Adobe Photoshop or Dreamweaver would need minimum 512 RAM. An AUTOCAD application may require up to 1GIG of RAM for optimum performance. The bottom line is: some applications require more resources; while other applications will perform adequately with a minimum amount of memory installed, an increased amount of RAM will help your computer overall performance.
